City limits and ZIP codes are not the same thing
A Santa Fe mailing address does not always mean an address inside the City of Santa Fe. The city covers only 24.6% of the land in ZIP 87501, 21.7% of ZIP 87507 and 21.2% of ZIP 87505 (Census 2020 ZIP-to-place relationship file). Much of the surrounding land belongs to unincorporated communities of Santa Fe County, such as Agua Fria and Tesuque, which the Census treats as census-designated places rather than cities.
That matters before you apply for anything, because whether the city or the county handles your local license depends on where the business actually sits. Our City of Santa Fe and Santa Fe County license guide walks through the check.
Santa Fe County, NM figures
Across Santa Fe County, 4,976 employer establishments employed 48,934 people in 2023, with an annual payroll of $2.57 billion. 2,981 of them (59.9%) had fewer than five employees, and 4,439 (89.2%) had fewer than twenty (County Business Patterns 2023).
Retail trade had the most establishments (793), followed by professional, scientific and technical services (649) and health care and social assistance (571). Health care carried the largest payroll, $595.8 million. Accommodation and food services employed the most people, 10,761 across 488 establishments.
Owners often search for the area's largest employers. The data behind this site does not name employers or rank them by headcount, so we do not either.
Owners working for themselves
Self-employment runs well above the state rate here. In the City of Santa Fe, 17.0% (+/- 1.4) of employed residents were self-employed, 6.0% in their own incorporated business and 11.0% in an unincorporated one. Santa Fe County's rate was 17.4% (+/- 1.2), against 10.2% (+/- 0.3) for New Mexico (American Community Survey 2020-2024).
Separately, the county had 17,772 businesses with no paid employees in 2024 (Nonemployer Statistics). That count comes from a different program and year than the employer figures, so we do not add the two. For an owner-only business, a funding request leans heavily on personal credit and on how cleanly business and personal money are kept apart.
Residential permits as a signal for builders
Santa Fe County authorized 926 new housing units by building permit in 2023, 244 in 2024 and 495 in 2025. In 2025, 251 of those units were single-family homes and 244 were in buildings with five or more units (Census Building Permits Survey). The counts cover new homes only, not remodels or commercial work, so they are context for contractors rather than a forecast.
What these figures mean for a funding request
A small payroll leaves little cushion, so timing gaps are the most common reason Santa Fe County owners call. Working capital covers a one-time gap; a line of credit covers gaps that repeat. Retail and restaurants, the largest groups in ZIP 87501, often need stock or kitchen equipment, which equipment financing and inventory financing are built for. Compare all six options, or see how they fit each sector on our industry pages.
Local resources and contacts
The City of Santa Fe's official website is santafenm.gov, and Santa Fe County's is santafecountynm.gov (both confirmed reachable on 2026-10-16). Owners also search for advising from the state's small business development center network and for the New Mexico Finance Authority; our northern New Mexico directory explains what each kind of organization does. None is connected with the De Vargas Street brokerage.

Santa Fe, NM businesses we help
Our partners have confirmed appetite for four kinds of business: contractors and construction trades, restaurants and food service, medical and dental practices, and retailers and wholesalers that carry stock. If your Santa Fe, NM business is something else, call and ask before you spend time on paperwork.
Documents to have ready
- The last three to six months of business bank statements
- A year-to-date profit and loss statement and balance sheet
- A driver's license or passport for each owner
- Proof of ownership and business registration
- Details of any loans, leases or advances the business already carries
- A written quote or invoice if the money is for equipment
No two partners ask for exactly the same file, so use this as a checklist rather than a rule.
The steps after your first call
- It starts with a call to (505) 407-7603 or the short contact form. On the phone we cover the purpose of the funds, time in business and approximate monthly revenue.
- We walk through the funding types that suit that purpose and the paperwork partners tend to ask for. Nothing goes out until you say so.
- After you give the go-ahead, we share the request with suitable lending partners, and each one decides on its own.
- When an offer arrives, weigh its full cost, how payments are scheduled and the conditions. Accepting is entirely your choice.
