Rowanwood Lenders, a small-business funding broker in Santa Fe, New Mexico, compares inventory financing, a line of credit and working capital for a shop restock. Santa Fe County had 793 retail employer establishments in 2023, more than any other sector. Partners review sell-through, supplier invoices and deposits, then decide and set rates and terms.
Why this question comes up so often here
Retail is the largest employer sector in Santa Fe County, NM: 793 establishments in 2023. Around E De Vargas St the pattern is stronger still; retail made up 333 of the 1,269 employer establishments in ZIP 87501 (ZIP Business Patterns 2023).
Most of those stores are small. In the county, 381 retailers (48.0%) had fewer than five employees, and in ZIP 87501 the figure was 57.7%. A small shop rarely has spare cash sitting idle for a large order, so restocking and funding go together.
Three ways to pay for the order
| Option | How it works | Fits when |
|---|---|---|
| Inventory financing | Advance against specific goods, which secure the deal | One large, identifiable order |
| Line of credit | Draw against a limit, repay, draw again | Frequent, smaller orders |
| Working capital | Lump sum repaid on a short schedule | A one-time gap not tied to particular goods |
Inventory financing ties the money to the merchandise; the partner usually files a lien on the goods and is repaid as they sell. A business line of credit is looser: you draw for any order and pay interest only on what is outstanding.
Working capital is the third option and the least tied to the goods. It suits a restock only when the order is small and the gap is short, such as covering a supplier invoice due before the weekend's sales clear.
A first-year shop asking for stock money
A newer shop has little sales history for a partner to read, which makes an unsecured line hard to obtain. Inventory financing can be more workable, because the goods themselves carry part of the risk. Expect partners to look harder at what you are buying, whom from, and how quickly comparable goods sell, and to weigh the owner's personal credit more heavily.
Sell-through decides the cost
Every week merchandise sits on the shelf, the financing keeps costing. A quick back-of-the-envelope test, using purely hypothetical figures: if an order is financed for six months but you expect it to sell over nine, three months of payments will come out of other revenue. Compare the expected sell-through with the repayment schedule before you commit, and size the order to what you can sell inside the term.
What a partner will ask for
- The supplier quote or purchase order
- Sales history, ideally by product line
- Recent bank and card-processing statements
- Existing liens on inventory, since a blanket lien from an earlier loan can block a new deal
- State registration and tax account details matching the business name
Questions to answer before you call
- How large is the order, and from which supplier?
- How quickly did similar goods sell last time?
- Do you restock this way once, or every few weeks?
- Is any of your stock already pledged to another lender?
- What will you do with goods that do not sell inside the term?
The answers usually make the choice between inventory financing and a line obvious before a partner sees anything.
Owner-only shops
Santa Fe County also had 1,035 retail businesses with no paid employees in 2024 (Nonemployer Statistics). For an owner-only shop, a clean business bank account separate from personal spending is worth more to a partner than almost any other document. Our retail financing page covers fit-outs and point-of-sale systems as well as stock, and the Santa Fe, NM figures page has the wider county picture. Further Santa Fe County articles:the blog.
